Making room for guests

It’s that time of year again, folks – the festive season. I can’t even believe that December is in our sights, let alone Christmas. For most expats living in the UAE, this is ‘visitor season’ and most of us are preparing our homes for the annual onslaught of house guests. With perfect weather and a city that continues amaze the world, who can blame family and friends for wanting to get a piece of the action. My smalls have been counting the sleeps till… Read more »

Dubai Design Week: What’s on my Radar

Where has a year gone? I cannot believe that Dubai Design Week is upon us already. Fast becoming one of Dubai’s most exciting fixtures on the events calendar, the programme for this year looks amazing. The trade show component of the event, Downtown Design, is in it’s fourth year and clearly gaining momentum. The fair takes place at Dubai Design District (D3) which is more developed this year with many shops, studios and cafes. A really cool place to visit with or without a design fair! Aside… Read more »

Dining room makeover

I recently made some long overdue changes to my dining room. If you’re new around here, it would help to know that my mission over the past year has been to lighten and brighten my home, which has meant getting rid of and/or changing a lot of dark wood for my preferred white, grey or lighter wood finishes. The new colour palette is finally starting to come together but the process has been a lengthly and tedious one. Here’s a peek at what… Read more »

Al Barsha Interiors district

Dubai residents, is it just me or have you noticed that there is somewhat of a home and garden district, if we can call it that, popping up along the Al Barsha side of Umm Suqeim Road? If you haven’t already clocked this delightful collection of stores cropping up along the service road that runs towards Al Khail Road, trust me, there is a lot of good stuff happening around there. One of the first big attractions to arrive in this area of newly finished commercial… Read more »

Line Kay, stylist & photographer

It has to be said that the old inter web can be a bit of a time vacuum. And I think it’s been around appropriately long enough to be called ‘old’ now. I mean there are twenty-somethings out there who would NEVER have known everyday life without it. How bizarre is that?! I’m showing my age now. But seriously, hands up anyone who sits down to quickly look for something online, gets distracted by another thing, and boom, two hours slip by just… Read more »

Inside Out

So, I’m back with another fabulous Durban discovery. I stumbled upon the beautiful home boutique, Inside Out, during one of those kid-free days I had last week…. sigh. Picturesque both inside and out, this store is full of gorgeous furniture, rugs, scatter cushions, local artwork, glassware and plenty of other must have accessories. You’ll have to excuse my iPhone photography-on-the-fly once again, but here’s a peek at what I saw there. The store is located on Lillian Ngoyi Road (previously Windermere Road) – if you’re in the area,… Read more »

Homeward bound

School has wrapped for the year and this household is officially on holiday. Picture me doing the happy dance! The Dubai summer, with its scorching temperatures and long days of kids being cooped up indoors, is not for the faint hearted. Last year, we braved the entire school break here and I pretty much swore I wouldn’t do that again if I could help it, so the kids and I are off to the homeland in a few days. We are so looking forward to… Read more »

Colour crush: Grey, white & gold

I’m always amazed at how quickly my taste in interior decor and design changes. If you had told me a year or two ago, maybe even six months ago, that I would be lusting after any sort of gold accents in my home, I would have scoffed… belligerently. But alas, here and now I find myself feeling strangely drawn to a color palette of muted tones with a touch of gold. More specifically, its grey, white and gold that’s got my… Read more »
