fiddle leaf fig tree

I’m on a bit of a mission to finish up some of the smaller projects around the house this month – you know, the ones that you put off for ages because they’re no biggie and you can get to them anytime…. but then you never do. One of these missions is to acquire some indoor plants for a space or two that need filling.

The fact that we don’t have many plants is not without good reason; I am a bit of a plant killer. I don’t mean to be, and I try hard not to be, but there is no denying my long history of bad luck with plants. Having said that, I like to think that this hex may be lifting. I’ve had a few orchids that have done a smashing job of surviving me lately – playing out of their boots actually – so I’m armed with renewed confidence and eager to get my green on.

When considering what plant to get, there is only one that stands out for me at the moment: the fiddle leaf fig (or ficus lyrata). Thanks to Pinterest, my favorite zines and the blogosphere, I’m painfully aware that all the cool kids have one. If you spend any time looking at interiors online, I am sure you would have noticed them too. Their signature broad leaves add so much greenery and if tall enough, they make a great big statement all on their own.

Aren’t they lovely? Tell me you love them too.

I read somewhere that these plants are native to Western Africa and grow in lowland tropical rainforests. Yikes! Could be a slight challenge here in the desert. And I am suspecting that they’ll require slightly more attention than the average house plant, but hey, I am always up for a challenge. I can just picture my mother picking her jaw up off the floor as she reads of my desire to own house plants, and a very specific one at that.

Now all I need to do is find the perfect little fig tree. Wish me luck.
