The renovation work at project Holiday Home is in full swing and as with any renovation project, we have had a few hiccups along the way, but for the past week or two all focus has been on the bathrooms. When presented with a blank canvas, or more accurately, bathrooms that have been stripped to their shell and core, it’s surprisingly tricky to decide on what your ideal space actually looks like. Not to mention all the finishes and details. I think we can blame Pinterest for inundating us with too many beautiful options. And so, after many prolonged Pinterest sessions spent drooling over dreamy bathrooms, I came to a few conclusions on what I (read as ‘we’) really want in a bathroom.
SIMPLICITY : I am all about uncluttered bathrooms with lots of light and few accessories.
LIGHT GREY FLOORING : I find myself hopelessly drawn to flooring with a grey and white palette – from small mosaics to polished concrete and terrazzo – it’s clear to me that I like the speckles and light tones.
WHITE WALLS : no surprises here. I have stepped right out of the safe zone in the kitchen area (have you seen my big old kitchen choices?), so I’m keeping things a little less ‘whoaaah’ in the bathrooms. We have opted for a small white subway tile in a herringbone layout for the walls in the wet areas, but we are limiting the tiling to only where it’s essential and keeping the rest of the walls simple with an off-white paint.
QUALITY BRASSWARE : I have been very tempted by gold or black taps, as you can no doubt see in the inspirational images above, but unlike my kitchen adventures, I have decided to play this conservatively by avoiding anything that may be a passing trend. I’m a big fan of Hansgrohe so I knew from the get-go that would be my choice from a quality perspective, but there is so much to choose from in their range that the selection process was tough.
FREESTANDING BATH : because I have been after one of these beauties for too long now.
The bathrooms are being installed as we speak, and here’s the final edit of what’s going into them:
1 Hansgrohe Raindance Jet shower head // 2-4 Mixers for the bath, basins and showers from the Hansgrohe Logis range // 5 terrazzo look-alike tile for the floors from Redd tiles // 6 white subway tile from Tile Africa in herringbone layout // 7 wall colour is ‘Almost There (1BW)’ from Paintsmiths // 8 wall mounted toilet with concealed cistern from On Tap // 9 Victoria+Albert freestanding bath tub // 10 wall mounted vanity with double sinks.
Keep an eye n my Instagram feed for some updates as the bathrooms progress.
