There’s a new throw pillow darling on my bed. It’s of African descent, features bold patterns and is bang on trend. Say hello to the lovely mud cloth! One can get lost in the realms of exotic African textiles as there are all sorts of interesting textures and materials, but my new focus is firmly fixed on a textile known as mud cloth. If you love earthy, neutral tones, patterns and textures, then this is for you. 1 | 2 | 3 | 4… Read more »
Where has a year gone? I cannot believe that Dubai Design Week is upon us already. Fast becoming one of Dubai’s most exciting fixtures on the events calendar, the programme for this year looks amazing. The trade show component of the event, Downtown Design, is in it’s fourth year and clearly gaining momentum. The fair takes place at Dubai Design District (D3) which is more developed this year with many shops, studios and cafes. A really cool place to visit with or without a design fair! Aside… Read more »

I’m surprisingly well prepared for Father’s Day this year. I’m not entirely sure how that came about, since I’ve been feeling particularly frantic lately, but then who am I to question such a formidable show of diligence (LOL!) – let’s just roll with it. Truth be told, I’ve seen a bunch of cute stuff for Father’s Day on Pinterest in the past few days, and since I do so love a bit of customised stationery, I thought why not try a little something… Read more »

I think we all know I am a big fan of Ikea. There is no denying it’s place in the world of interiors. The brand epitomises the phrase ‘form follows function’ ensuring that everything they produce is both beautiful and functional, not to mention easy on your bank account. So you can imagine how thrilled I was when the furniture giant recently asked me to share some of my favourite Ikea pieces – the ones I #CantPartWith. Whilst I’m a big… Read more »
Being home for a holiday is always exciting and one of my favourite things to do. The allure of comfort food, good wine, friends and family is as good a reason as any to visit South Africa. This year, I have one more thing to be excited about. A few of my latest discoveries. A burst of new home decor shops that embrace minimalist design and Scandinavian influences, while mixing it with a good dash of South African style and earthiness. I’ve rounded… Read more »
Hands up anyone who’s been reading this blog for more than 18 months. Anyone out there who’s been around longer than 20 months… maybe even 22 months? Ok, Mom, you can put your hand down now. And can I just say, thanks for being my no.1 fan! It recently dawned on me that the first week of October will mark the second anniversary of my blogging journey. I can scarcely believe that two years have passed by so quickly. So… Read more »
I’ve been having such fun with a project I’m currently working on in a beautiful Arabian Ranches home. Whilst there was nothing particularly wrong with the state of things, the owner was eager to give the downstairs living and dining room a little refresh – just to change things up a bit and keep things, well, fresh. And that’s precisely what we are doing. The living room has a huge corner sofa that is begging for statement artwork above it so I have been on the hunt for… Read more »
If this is not the first post you’ve ever read at House of Hawkes then you’ve probably noticed that we’ve had a wee face-lift. In keeping with the decluttering and minimising trend that’s slowly sweeping across my home, I thought it only fair to make a few housekeeping changes online too.
