I met Louw Roets the SARCDA trade exhibition held annually in Johannesburg, South Africa. The event showcases wholesalers, importers and manufacturers of gift, decor and design items and I was really inspired after my last visit. Louw is a Cape Town based product designer and creates conceptual pieces with a fun element. He’s also a chatty and friendly individual who I enjoyed speaking to. Louw combines traditional handcraft techniques with modern technology and one cannot help but smile when you see some of his creations. I’ve been looking… Read more »
I have to admit, I didn’t fall in love with the Pantone’s choice of colours for 2016 when they were first announced. Hence the silence on this topic. The selected colour is supposed to reflect the spirit of the time. Pantone has said that colour “has always been an integral part on how a culture expresses the attitudes and emotions of the times”. For the first time, the blending of two shades, Rose Quartz and Serenity were chosen as the Pantone colour(s) of the year…. Read more »
Happy New Year, my lovelies! I hope that you all had a fabulous festive season and are ready to tackle 2016 head on. If you’re looking for ways in which to make some decor changes, or just light up your new year in general, I have my eye on a trend that may be just the thing for you – neon signage! Traditionally used in advertising, neon signage has become popular with many contemporary artists and architects. This trend has made it’s way… Read more »
There is so much to love about Jotun’s 2016 Wall Trends. The colours and themes are inspired by the world that surrounds us, and as Jotun so aptly puts it, are “reflections of a journey – one that makes a house become a home.” Whilst I love a bit of pretty marketing talk as much as the next person, let me assure you, this particular collection truly resonates with me and there is something in here for everyone.
As you’ve probably realised, metallics are very much on my radar. My Pinterest feed is shinier than usual and its not even Christmas yet. I recently discovered something so pretty and unique, I just had to share. Let me take you back to high school (early nineties, anyone?) and see if you can recall which precious natural resource is represented by the chemical symbol Au? It’s gold, of course! Aptly named Au Prints offers a set of prints with gold ink manually applied. Limited to… Read more »
I am seeing copper and shades of pink everywhere. From stationery and cake decor to kitchens and living rooms. I am loving it. What a pretty pair they make. Metallics of all kinds are very much on trend, but copper is really catching my eye. Well-known for it’s efficient conductivity of heat, copper provides a perception of warmth as we head towards the cooler months. We are not quite there yet in Dubai – this week has been particularly stifling – but can I just… Read more »
As we bid au revoir to yet another month, it’s time for our next Favourite Things roundup. This month’s edition is a follow-on from my post on natural decor. These fabulous pieces of furniture and accessories will help create a calm and neutral ambiance in your home. 1. I raved about this pendant light and similar oversized cotton beauties here. This lamp radiates beauty and simplicity. The frame is made of bamboo and a very fine handwoven cotton. Did you know that bamboo is a renewable resource that… Read more »
I’m a blatant sucker for all things natural. We’re talking natural fibres, wood, colours, textures, textiles… you name it. If it has any aspect of natural going on, I’m probably sold. This passion of mine has always been (and I suspect will always be) a key focus in my decorating style. I like to keep things light and airy with white in abundance. Less colour, more texture…. is probably a good way to sum it up. Not ideal with the smalls… Read more »
I’m always amazed at how quickly my taste in interior decor and design changes. If you had told me a year or two ago, maybe even six months ago, that I would be lusting after any sort of gold accents in my home, I would have scoffed… belligerently. But alas, here and now I find myself feeling strangely drawn to a color palette of muted tones with a touch of gold. More specifically, its grey, white and gold that’s got my… Read more »
There’s been plenty of black and white on the blog this month, it’s no wonder my recent online browsing has been particularly focused in that direction. So it seems only appropriate to round up some of my favorite black and white finds as we bid farewell to another month.
One of the greatest secrets of decorating is that a room doesn’t have to be elaborate to look amazing. It can be as simple as black and white. The high contrast combination adds effortless elegance to any space.
Today I bring you a flash of inspiration with some bright and beautiful fabrics from Caitlin Wilson Textiles. Dulux predicted teal as the color of choice for 2014. A stark contrast to Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Radiant Orchid. I have to admit that I find myself firmly rooted in the Dulux camp on this one. Teal is by far a more refreshing color. According to Dulux, it “combines the natural harmony of green with the tranquility of blue to symbolize balance”, and I concur. Teal, or ‘Sea Urchin 1’, the precise shade specified by Dulux, combines beautifully with shades… Read more »
I am terribly bored of our dining room. It is in desperate need of some attention and sprucing up – has been for some time now. Everything in there is simply functional and not particularly pretty or inspiring. I think it may even be bordering on drab. I think what’s really bothering me is that it is all dark wood in there while the rest of the house has been lightened and brightened bit by bit over the past year. Safe… Read more »
